The Dodgers have made a few roster moves lately, so let's catch up.
First off, the Dodgers have finally cut ties with Ramon Ortiz. In his place, righty Justin Miller has been called up. Ortiz was given plenty of chances, but never came close to earning an extended stay. He finished with a 1-2 record, 6.30 ERA, and 1.63 WHIP.
Scott Elbert was then called up... and promptly sent back down after one appearance. Elbert didn't make a good impression at all when he appeared in last Saturday's game against the Rockies. He faced six batters, walked three of them, gave up a single, and generally looked to have no control.
When Elbert was first called up, it was Nick Green who got DFA'd. Green was pretty much victimized by Jamey Carroll's solid play when Rafael Furcal was hurt. Still, Green was only 1-for-8 with an RBI. Not much of a sample size, but good enough to get the boot.
Finally, righty Travis Schlichting has replaced Elbert. He pitched 2 2/3 innings last year, giving up a run.

Russ Ortiz is designated for assignment
In move that anyone could see coming, the Dodgers have designated reliever Russ Ortiz for assignment on Sunday. In his place will be Jon Link, who was acquired as part of the Juan Pierre trade this winter.
I know I've done my fair share of Ortiz bashing, but I actually feel sorry for the guy. He had an excellent Spring Training, pitching 18 innings with a 2.50 ERA, striking out 15. With the injuries to Hong-Chih Kuo and Ronald Belisario, he pretty much forced his way onto the team.
Unfortunately for everyone, he left his good pitches at Camelback Ranch, as he was miserable when the real games started. He gave up eight runs in seven innings, good for a 10.29 ERA.
The final nail in the coffin was this past Friday night against the Giants. After retiring the side in order in the eighth, he let four of six batters reach base, getting charged with four runs and turning a blowout into a close game. A similar situation occurred against the Marlins about a week ago.
There's a chance Ortiz could accept an assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque, so we'll see. I would highly doubt anybody would claim him off waivers.
As for Link, his stay appears to be short thanks to the impending returns of Kuo and Belisario. But, it's a move the Dodgers simply had to make to try and shake up an ineffective bullpen early in the season.

Weaver among minor league signings
The Dodgers continue on their quest to build up their bench by signing utility man Alfredo Amezaga, and pitchers Jeff Weaver and Ramon Ortiz. All three were signed to minor league contracts, but will have cracks at making the big league roster.
Almezaga is coming off of microfracture surgery in his left knee that limited him to 27 games last season with the Marlins. He's a career .251 hitter with a .311 OBP%. His best year was in 2004 with Florida when he hit .263 with 105 hits and 13 stolen bases in 133 games.
Weaver has signed his second straight minor league deal with the Dodgers. He didn't make the majors out of Spring Training last year, but stayed for good when he was called up on April 30. From there, he had a very effective season, posting a 6-4 record with a 3.65 ERA, and seven starts in 28 appearances.
Ramon "Don't Call Me Russ" Ortiz is a journeyman. He last appeared in 2007 with the Twins and Rockies. He was with the Giants in Triple-A last season, going 5-6 with a 3.05 ERA.
It's always hard to tell how Spring Training will shake out as far as players there on a minor league invite. I would think Weaver will be back in the bullpen based on last year alone. He proved that he can be a spot starter and long reliever.
For Amezaga, his first issue is obviously his knee. He worked out for a handful of teams, and the Dodgers were the ones to nab him. Since he's a switch-hitter, if he impresses enough, he could have a crack at the team to give at least one lefty to pinch-hit.
As for Ortiz, despite putting up a good ERA in the minors last year, he seems like a long-shot to make the team out of the gate. Maybe he'll spend more time in the Triple-A, ala Shawn Estes of last season.
