ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

SHAWN GREEN’s Major League baseball career spanned nearly fourteen years with four teams: the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the New York Mets. During his baseball career he won numerous accolades, including both the American League Gold Glove Award and the Silver Slugger in ’99. He finished in the top ten of voting for league MVP three times, was a two‑time All Star, and holds several Major League records as well as numerous individual team records with both the Blue Jays and the Dodgers. Throughout his career, he was active in countless charities and donated close to two million dollars to numerous causes, most notably the Dodgers Dream Foundation. Green retired from baseball at 34 to spend more time with his wife, Lindsay, and daughters, Presley and Chandler, at their home in Southern California.

GORDON MCALPINE has been described by Publishers Weekly as "a gifted stylist, with clean, clear and muscular prose." He is the author of three acclaimed novels: Joy in Mudville, The Persistence of Memory, and Mystery Box. Recent roster moves

The Dodgers have made a few roster moves lately, so let's catch up.

First off, the Dodgers have finally cut ties with Ramon Ortiz. In his place, righty Justin Miller has been called up. Ortiz was given plenty of chances, but never came close to earning an extended stay. He finished with a 1-2 record, 6.30 ERA, and 1.63 WHIP.

Scott Elbert was then called up... and promptly sent back down after one appearance. Elbert didn't make a good impression at all when he appeared in last Saturday's game against the Rockies. He faced six batters, walked three of them, gave up a single, and generally looked to have no control.

When Elbert was first called up, it was Nick Green who got DFA'd. Green was pretty much victimized by Jamey Carroll's solid play when Rafael Furcal was hurt. Still, Green was only 1-for-8 with an RBI. Not much of a sample size, but good enough to get the boot.

Finally, righty Travis Schlichting has replaced Elbert. He pitched 2 2/3 innings last year, giving up a run.

Dodgers add Nick Green

The Dodgers are looking to replace the many departures from last year's bench by signing infielder Nick Green to a minor league contract. He'll earn $500,000 plus $100,000 in incentives if he makes the big club.

With Juan Castro and Mark Loretta gone, the Dodgers lost some good depth that filled in some big innings. Jamey Carroll has already been added, so maybe Green can back up Rafael Furcal at short since Carroll plays pretty much everywhere else but there.

Green appeared in 103 games with the Red Sox last season. He hit .236 with six homers and 35 RBIs. Not exactly huge numbers. Not that I follow the Red Sox closely, but I do know they had problems at short all year, and Green was one of the few that had a chance to make an impact and never really did.

Keep in mind he's not on the major league roster, so he'll have to work his way up during the spring.
