Needing another fresh arm, the Dodgers have designated the struggling Charlie Haeger for assignment. Jon Link has been called up for the fourth time already this season.
Haeger's season started off beautifully, as he struck out 12 Marlins in a no-decision back on April 11. He certainly looked like the fifth starter the Dodgers were searching for. Unfortunately, things quickly went downhill, as he never posted another quality start again.
Link has a 4.15 ERA in four appearances. He last pitched June 7 against the Cardinals, going two scoreless innings. He'll be one of the last options out of the bullpen, but provides insurance.

Ely is back as Haeger gets DL'd
Charlie Haeger has been placed on the 15-day DL with plantar fasciitis, and John Ely has once again been recalled. Ely was originally sent down to make room for Jeff Weaver a few days ago. Even though players are supposed to wait 10 days to be recalled, since Ely's replacing an injured player of the same position, it's allowed.
Who knows how much this injury has affected Haeger, especially on Saturday night when he got yanked without recording a single out. His numbers are just putrid so far at 0-4 with an 8.49 ERA. I don't want to go so far to say that his injury isn't that bad because that wouldn't be fair to speculate. But, I'm sure the Dodgers are willing to take their time as he tries to figure his stuff out.
As for Ely, he pitched really well against the Brewers last week, so he deserves another chance. He'll get the ball on Tuesday in Arizona. Since the Dodgers are still searching for anyone to claim the final two spots of the rotation, it'll be his spot to lose.

The fifth starter's spot belongs to Haeger
The battle for the fifth starter's spot has come to an end, and Charlier Haeger has emerged victorious. Joe Torre made the decision on Thursday, the same day Blake DeWitt was named starter at second.
Haeger earned the job after an impressive spring. He made six starts and pitched 16 1/3 innings, posting a 2.20 ERA. He walked 11, but did strike out 15.
It's not like he was handed this job, because the other contenders did their part to make this a tough decision for Torre. Russ Ortiz had a 2.50 ERA in 18 innings, and Ramon Ortiz had a 1.02 ERA in 17 2/3 innings. With numbers like those, you would think they'll have some sort of role with the team going forward. At least one of them will.
In his young career with the White Sox, Padres, and Dodgers, Haeger has a 2-3 record with a 5.26 ERA. But, he was 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA last season, which earned him the opportunity this spring.
So the rotation is now set: Vicente Padilla, Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda, and Haeger. There's only one lefty in there, but Haeger's knuckleball is definitely a different look anyway.
Haeger's first start looks to be sometime in Florida next weekend. He could be available out of the bullpen until then.
